occurs around 55 to 65 years. |
| |
| Arthritis affects millions
of people all over the world and many in India. Until a few years
ago, patient having severe arthritis used to suffer from agonizing
pain for lifetime. They had to limit their activities, were disabled
and often become house bound, today patients having advanced arthritis
can be given new life and live normal life after surgery called joint
replacement joint replacement operations are among most successful
of all operations with predictable results if they are performed in
well equipped center by surgeons of highly technical skill and training. |

Types of Arthritis |

|

Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid arthritis
|
What is Osteoarthritis - degenerative
joint disease - osteoarthrosis? |
Osteoarthritis is the most common
type of arthritis. Osteoarthritis is also known as "old age"
arthritis or "wear and tear" arthritis.
Osteoarthritis is a joint disease which affects cartilage, a slippery
tissue that covers the ends of bones in a joint. In osteoarthritis,
the surface layers of cartilage breaks down and wears away. This makes
bones under the cartilage to rub together, causing pain, swelling,
and loss of motion of the joint. This makes joint lose its normal
shape. Small growths called osteophytes and breaking of bits of bones
further complicates the disease. |
| |
What is rheumatoid arthritis? |
Rheumatoid arthritis is chronic inflammatory
illness that attacks the linings of the joints. The immune system
attacks normal tissue components mistakenly if they were invading
pathogens. Such diseases are called autoimmune disease. Rheumatoid
arthritis is an autoimmune disease that may have different affects
on different people.
Unlike osteoarthritis, which does not affect any other part of the
body, rheumatoid arthritis may affect other parts of the body. The
lining of the joints affected by rheumatoid arthritis further affects
membrane lining the blood vessels, which causes inflammation in heart
and lungs. If inflammation is not controlled by medications, it deforms
the joint.
|
What is trauma related arthritis? |
| Trauma related arthritis results after
an injury to the joint and is also commonly seen. It also causes pain,
restriction of mobility and deformities. |
| |
Diagnosis of Arthritis |
| There are 100 types of arthritis such as rheumatoid
arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout and infective which may require
detailed examination by the doctors. X-ray, blood test and other
investigation for diagnosis of type of arthritis and necessary management
of that type of arthritis.

Treatment for Arthritis |
| The surgical options for treatment of arthritis
are: |
- Arthroscopic Surgery - This surgery is useful
at initial stage only. The joint is washed out to remove the debris
and excess of joint fluid. This is mainly for diagnosis and can
give pain relief for short period.
- Osteotomy - This surgery is done to change
the alignment of the bone, for the patient age group of 30 to
50.
- Joint Replacement or Arthroplasty - This is
surgical replacement of damaged or diseased joint or joint components
with a prosthetic joint or joint components.
